1890-S VAM-19

Description

Steve Sabella discovered the 1890-S VAM-19 Morgan dollar in April 1980, classifying it as III2 3 with a C3k reverse under the designation Far Date, Doubled Reverse. The obverse is distinguished by a date set farther right than normal, a positional anomaly resulting from where the date logits were punched into the working die. The C3k reverse shows legend, motto, and wreath elements doubled toward the rim, indicating hub doubling displaced outward. Cataloging notes reveal an extensive die-sharing network: the same obverse die produced VAM-10, VAM-10-C, and VAM-10-F, meaning this obverse saw service across multiple reverse pairings. Additionally, VAM-19 and VAM-19A are confirmed as the exact same die pair, with the A suffix marking a different die state. The reverse doubling pattern is very similar to 1890-S VAM-28, though it appears to be a different die. The 1890-S Morgan was struck at San Francisco with moderate mintage.
