1890-S VAM-10G
Error
Description
Discovered by John Higginbotham in 2017 and subsequently eliminated as a duplicate of VAM-21 in September 2023, the 1890-S VAM-10G was classified III2 1 - C3a with DPIS 188 and named Far Date, Die Breaks ED and TE. The obverse die III2 1 placed the date at the left edge of the far-date position. The reverse C3a die carried die cracks at the top of TED of UNITED and STATE, with displaced field breaks at ED and TE — features that ultimately proved indistinguishable from those already cataloged under VAM-21. Following the VAMWorld review process, VAM-10G was delisted as a duplicate of the pre-existing VAM-21 attribution. Collectors who acquired coins attributed as VAM-10G should treat them as VAM-21 specimens. The 1890-S Morgan dollar was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco with a mintage of just over 8 million pieces, a common date in the series but one that offers a rich variety landscape for specialists. The elimination of VAM-10G illustrates the ongoing refinement that characterizes VAMWorld's attribution methodology.
