Description
HK-732a is the bronze version of the medal the San Francisco Chronicle issued in 1890, its twenty-fifth year, when it opened a new building at Market, Geary and Kearny Streets. That building, with 1890 under it, fills the reverse, and the surrounding legend speaks of its inauguration. The obverse carries a bust of M. H. de Young, labelled "Proprietor.," inside a souvenir legend for the anniversary, with the Meriden Britannia Co. signature in very small letters. De Young and his brother Charles had founded the paper in January 1865 as a small daily devoted to the theater. In the earthquake and fire of April 18, 1906, every newspaper plant in the city was lost, and the Chronicle, Call and Examiner printed a joint issue on an Oakland press. The white metal striking is HK-732. This one is bronze, 43 mm.
