Description
HK-148 is a 1889 so-called dollar commemorating Forefathers Monument. Pennsylvania's bicentennial in 1882 produced several commemorative medals honoring William Penn's 1682 founding of the colony, while Vermont celebrated its own centennial of statehood in 1891. This bronze so-called dollar represents the standard commemorative medal composition of its era. Bronze pieces were often the primary production run, with silver reserved for presentation copies and white metal for budget editions. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. The HK numbering system established by Hibler and Kappen in 1963 brought order to hundreds of previously uncataloged American commemorative medals, many of which had been ignored by mainstream numismatic references.
Rarity Notes
HK-148 is scarce in the numismatic market. Production quantities for Gilded Age commemorative medals were typically modest, and survival rates vary significantly based on the original distribution method and the material's durability.
