Description

Rev. John Davenport is the subject of the reverse of HK-614a: his small bust in a beaded circle at the top, named on either side, and below it a scene of a group gathered beneath a tree, titled "John Davenport Preaching to the Emigrants. 1638." The obverse turns to the town itself, a panoramic view of buildings and trees over the words "The Green," with scientific and educational instruments in a smaller circle beneath, flanked by branches; the microscopic signature of C. Theiler of Meriden, Connecticut, sits under the view. The surrounding legend ties the medal to April 25, 1888, two hundred and fifty years after New Haven was settled. HK-614a is the white metal striking; the bronze, HK-614, is struck on a thick planchet. Both are 38 mm. A simpler city-seal design for the same day is HK-613.
