Description

A view of the exposition buildings fills the obverse of HK-147, the Type II medal of Cincinnati's 1888 Centennial Exposition of the Ohio Valley and Central States, with "July 4 - Oct. 27 / 1888 / Cincinnati, Ohio" below. The reverse sets a wreath in a sunken circle, enclosing the names of the region, inside a border legend calling it an exposition of growth and prosperity. The Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Trade & Transportation and the Ohio Mechanics Institute ran the fair jointly, backed by a public guaranty fund; twelve neighboring states took part, and daily Venetian gondola pageants on the canal and electric displays drew crowds of more than a million. Hibler and Kappen do not know who designed the medal or whether it was official. White metal; bronze is HK-147a.
