Description
Silver plating over bronze distinguishes HK-608a from the plain bronze HK-608; the dies are the same. On the reverse an open wreath encloses the history of Springfield in brief, "Organized / A Town / May 14, 1636. / --OS.-- / A City May 25 / 1852," with the O.S. pointing to old-style dating. The obverse carries the city seal ringed by "Springfield, Massachusetts" and the line announcing the 250th anniversary as held on May 25 and 26, 1886. The first day of the observance therefore fell on the date the town had become a city 34 years before. Hibler and Kappen name no maker. Silver-plated bronze, 38 mm.
