Description

Harness racing in front of the Grand Amphitheatre at St. Louis is the scene on the reverse of HK-607, a white metal medal of the 26th annual St. Louis fair, held October 4 to 9, 1886. A tower or reviewing stand with a flag flying rises in the center, and the racing scene, labeled "Grand Amphitheatre," sits within a countersunk, polished circle. Along the edge of the foreground are the microscopic initials E A K, which Hibler and Kappen identify as those of the Philadelphia medalist Edward A. Kretschman. The legend around reads "26th Annual Fair St Louis Mo Oct 4 to 9," with 1886 below. The obverse is a head of Columbia facing right inside an open wreath of corn and wheat stalks, framed by a beaded border. The medal measures 35 mm and is listed in white metal only.
