Description
The 1885 World's Industrial & Cotton Expo so-called dollar (HK-142) is a commemorative piece from the State & Regional Commemoratives series. Mardi Gras commemoratives from New Orleans, including pieces for the Rex parade, represent the festive side of regional medal production during this period. The white metal composition reflects the practical economics of medal production in this era. Tin-based alloys allowed manufacturers to produce large quantities at low cost while maintaining acceptable detail and appearance. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. The Hibler-Kappen catalog has been updated and expanded since its 1963 first edition, with later researchers adding newly discovered varieties and extending coverage into the modern era.
Rarity Notes
HK-142 is moderately scarce in the numismatic market. Production quantities for Gilded Age commemorative medals were typically modest, and survival rates vary significantly based on the original distribution method and the material's durability.
