Description

1885-O VAM-17 8 in Denticles, Far Date Discovered by Clayton Christiansen January 2001. '''17 III212 · C3a (8 in Denticles, Far Date) (181)''' '''Obverse III212–''' Top of 8 shows in denticle space below first 8 as raised curved bar. Date set further right than normal. '''DPIS - ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: '''Comments: # For decades, the [[1885-O VAM-17 was the only misplaced date known to be found on 1885-O issues. A second misplaced date was the recently discovered in July of 2009, the [[1885-O VAM-28. Close inspection of an EDS specimen reveals that it is likely a 1 and not an 8 under the first 8 of the date. MDS specimens will have a doubled ear from die fatigue which also rounds out the top of the 1 making it resemble an 8. LDS specimens may have mushy denticles under the date (hiding the MPD) but should be identifiable by a very strong diagonal die file line in the lower right serif of the L in LIBERTY (present on all known [[1885-O VAM-17's in any die state). EDS specimens should command a larger premium than MDS but current 2010 VAMview prices appear to be more fitting for the MDS (with the fake doubled ear and more worn down MPD that looks slightly more rounded). -VAMfinder # This variety is known in DMPL.
