Description
On this 1885 Indian Head Cent, a die clash is visible on the reverse where Liberty's forehead and nose from the obverse die have been transferred under and through the letter C in CENT, with a portion of the ear also visible to the right of the N in ONE. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, and the impact force transfers raised design elements from one die as incuse impressions into the opposing die face. On subsequently struck coins, these incuse die impressions produce raised transferred elements — in this case, the facial profile of the Indian Head portrait appearing beneath the reverse inscription. The pattern of facial features appearing under the C in CENT is characteristic of the Indian Head Cent series because the prominent high-relief portrait elements on the obverse align with the reverse lettering area when the dies come into direct contact. The visibility of forehead, nose, and ear transfer documents the angle and depth of the clash event with enough precision to distinguish this die pair from other 1885 die clash varieties. The 1885 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1885 mintage of approximately 11.8 million pieces reflects mid-series production levels. Die clashes on Indian Head Cents from the 1880s document the mechanical press operations of the era, where manual die alignment and the absence of modern press safety systems created regular opportunities for die-on-die contact during production runs at the Philadelphia facility.
