Description
The statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee in New Orleans was unveiled on February 22, 1884, and HK-758 is a souvenir of the day. Its obverse shows the statue rising from a fenced landscape, with "New Orleans Feb. 22. 1884" around the top and the microscopic signature of Peiffer Bros. of Philadelphia on the base of the scene. The reverse, inside a large wreath, reads as a souvenir of the unveiling and gives Lee's dates, born January 19, 1807, and died October 12, 1870. Hibler and Kappen observe that statues of this kind were usually paid for by public subscription, and that selling medals and other mementos often brought in a good share of the money. Pewter, 45 mm; a bronze version is HK-758a.
