Description

Jabez Hamlin, named on the obverse as the first mayor of Middletown, Connecticut, appears in a bust turned partly to the right inside a garland-like circle, with "1784-July 13-1884" above him. The legend around reads "To Commemorate the First Centennial of the City of Middletown," so the medal marks a hundred years from July 13, 1784. On the reverse the city seal sits in a central circle, with "The Seal of the City of Middletown" above and "Connecticut" below between two star-like ornaments; unlike the obverse, this side has no beaded border. Hibler and Kappen give no maker. HK-599a is the white metal striking, 40 mm across, from dies also used for bronze (HK-599) and copper (HK-599b).
