Description

The New Orleans Fire Department marked fifty years on March 4, 1885, and HK-143d records the anniversary on its obverse: a fire engine inside a shield, with New Orleans above it and 1885 below, the shield set in a wreath and ringed by "Semi centennial of the Fire Department March 4." The reverse borrowed the exposition die used for the Mardi Gras and Liberty Bell pieces, a globe over the main building with "The Worlds Exposition" and the years 1884 and 1885, signed E A K for Edward A. Kretschman. HK-143d is white metal, 33 mm. The exposition was then in full swing in Upper City Park; it ran from December 16, 1884, to June 1, 1885, and drew close to three-quarters of a million visitors, about 400,000 of them paying.
