Description

The British left New York City on November 25, 1783, and the city's centennial of Evacuation Day in 1883 produced this medal, struck by John H. Diehl of Philadelphia. The obverse shows a military bust of Washington facing right, signed Morgan in microscopic letters below the shoulder for the engraver George T. Morgan, with a coat of arms at the left, "G. Washington" at the right and the motto "Exitus acta probat" on a ribbon below. The reverse is a seal: a shield with three flags on each side, an open wreath tied at the bottom, thirteen stars above and two cannon below, with "Evacuation Day Centennial" above and "Nov. 25 1783. City of New York. 1883" below. HK-125d is the white metal striking, 35 mm (Baker 457A); the bronze is HK-125a (Baker 457).
