Description
James Oglethorpe, seated at full length and facing left, fills the obverse of HK-595, named in the legend "Gen. James Oglethorpe" inside a beaded border. The reverse sets the state seal into a sunken center given a mirror-like finish, with the legend "Sesqui-Centennial of the Settlement of Georgia" around it and the dates 1733 and 1883 at the bottom. The medal marks a century and a half since Oglethorpe's colonists settled Georgia in 1733; the colony went on to become a state on January 2, 1788. Hibler and Kappen list no maker and say nothing of how the anniversary was observed. HK-595 is the white metal striking, 35 mm across, and the same dies were used for bronze (HK-595a) and silver (HK-595b).
