Description

HK-135a is a copper-plated striking of the medal made for the Newburgh, New York, celebration of October 18, 1883, 41 mm, from the dies used for the bronze HK-134 and the white metal HK-135. The occasion bundled three centennials together: Washington's headquarters at Newburgh, the proclamation of peace in 1783, and the disbanding of the Continental Army. The obverse shows the headquarters building in the center, with those events named in the border legends and the engraver's microscopic signature, A. Demarest, under the building. The reverse sets a coat of arms within the motto praising Washington for refusing a crown, and a border inscription says these were Washington's family arms and the source of the design of the American flag, an assertion the medal makes on its own authority. A silver striking is HK-135b.
