Description
The 1883 Proof Hawaiian Quarter, designated P25C (Pattern 25 Cents), is a proof striking of the hapaha (quarter dollar) denomination from the original 1883 Hawaiian coinage dies. Unlike the 500,000 business strike quarters produced for circulation, proof quarters were struck in very limited numbers for presentation purposes, collectors, and official records. The proof Hawaiian quarter exhibits the characteristics typical of 19th-century proof coinage: deeply mirrored fields, sharp frosted design elements, and exceptional strike quality. The Kalakaua portrait on the obverse and the royal coat of arms on the reverse appear with maximum sharpness and detail, undiminished by the mass production techniques used for circulation strikes. Proof Hawaiian quarters were produced in quantities of fewer than 30 pieces, consistent with the proof production practices of the San Francisco Mint in the 1880s. These pieces were distributed to officials, dignitaries, and prominent collectors.
