RCD-5c-1883-17R Retained Cud

Description

Following immediately after RCD-5c-1883-16R, this seventeenth documented retained cud for the 1883 Liberty Head Nickel without CENTS originates from a different working die at Philadelphia. Consecutive catalog numbers for the same date and denomination indicate that die fractures were a recurring feature of production, each die developing its own unique crack pattern that distinguishes one retained cud from the next. The "R" suffix again places this variety on Charles Barber's original reverse — the design whose absence of a denomination value prompted Congress to mandate the addition of CENTS partway through 1883. Collectors pursuing No CENTS Liberty Nickels as a type often encounter die varieties as a secondary collecting dimension, and consecutive entries like #16 and #17 offer pair-collecting opportunities. The No CENTS type was produced for only part of one year before the With CENTS version replaced it, compressing all die variety production into a narrow window. Nickel alloy composition.
