Description

Newburgh, New York, where Washington kept his headquarters at the end of the Revolution, held a centennial celebration on October 18, 1883, and this medal records three anniversaries at once. The obverse shows the headquarters building, with "Celebration at Newburgh, N. Y. October 18th" above and the microscopic signature "A. Demarest, Sc. N. Y." below; the upper border reads "1783 -- Centennial -- 1883" and the lower "Proclamation of peace, disbandment of the army." The reverse carries a coat of arms in the center, ringed by the line "He was most nobly crowned by refusing to be crowned" and thirteen stars, with a border legend calling it Washington's family arms. Hibler and Kappen list HK-134 as bronze, 41 mm (Baker R-456A); white metal, copper-plated and silver strikings are HK-135 to HK-135b.
