Description
The seal of the City of Baltimore fills the obverse of HK-592, with the words "Baltimore Festival" arched over it and the year 1882 set beneath, all inside a beaded border. The reverse turns to fancy: a bird in full flight carries a small elf-like rider seated between its wings, and the single word "Oriole" is lettered underneath, again within beading. Hibler and Kappen record neither a maker nor an account of the festival itself, so what can be said of the occasion comes from the piece: a Baltimore celebration of 1882 tied in some way to the name Oriole. The medal is listed in white metal only, at 35 mm, and Rulau catalogues it as Md-Ba 6a in his Maryland listings.
