Description
The 1880 Proof Four Dollar Pattern - J-1662, Stella Coiled Hair is a proof four-dollar Stella pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Design Reform Patterns (1880-1942) series. It carries George T. Morgan's Coiled Hair design for the four-dollar Stella, which was also struck in gold (J-1660) on planchets cut from shaved half eagle stock. At least five are known in aluminum; USPatterns.com notes that a gilt piece sold as this number weighs 59.1 grains and is therefore copper. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1862, Adams-Woodin 1635 and Taxay EP1208. Cataloged as PCGS #62047.
