Description

The 1880 Proof Four Dollar Pattern - J-1659, Stella Flowing Hair is a proof four-dollar Stella pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Design Reform Patterns (1880-1942) series. It carries Charles E. Barber's Flowing Hair design for the four-dollar Stella, which was also struck in gold (J-1657) on planchets cut from shaved half eagle stock. At least five are known in aluminum; USPatterns.com thinks one example offered as aluminum is more likely gilt copper. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1859, Adams-Woodin 1632 and Taxay EP1205. Cataloged as PCGS #389234.
