Description

The reverse of the Newtown medal makes a large claim in small letters. Inside a wreath it explains that the Six Nations under Joseph Brant, backed by British regulars and Tories, were beaten by the Americans led by Maj. Gen. John Sullivan, a New Hampshire man, a victory it says brought nearer the day that secured the independence of the United States. The obverse shows a tower and its grounds between the years 1779 and 1879, ringed by "In commemoration of the battle of Newtown N. Y." with "Aug 29. 1779." below. HK-123a is the silver striking, made as a proof, at 40 mm. The same design exists in bronze (HK-123), brass (HK-123b) and pewter (HK-124). Hibler and Kappen record no maker or issuer for the 1879 centennial piece.
