Description

The two dates on this Stony Point medal tell the story of its making. The reverse, a battle scene, gives the day of the American assault in Roman numerals, XV July MDCCLXXIX, under the Latin heading "Stony Point expugnatum"; the obverse gives the day of the centennial in plain figures, July 16th 1879, beneath a bust of General Anthony Wayne, who led the attack, with "Centennial anniversary of the battle of Stony Point" around. HK-122a is the white metal striking, 34 mm; the bronze is HK-122. Hibler and Kappen note that many of the Revolutionary War anniversary medals of these years were official in character, struck and sold to help meet the cost of a local celebration, while honoring events of national weight. No maker, sponsor or account of the 1879 Stony Point celebration is recorded for this piece.
