Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1879 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1629a is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This metric dollar pairs William Barber's 1878 goloid obverse (as on J-1557 to J-1564) with a new reverse; USPatterns.com suggests his son Charles may have cut it. It was part of the Barber goloid set with J-1617 and the Flowing Hair Stella. The design was repeated in 1880 (J-1651 to J-1653). The single white metal example was sold in RARCOA's Kaufman sale in 1978. It is struck in white metal with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1826 and Taxay EP1172. Cataloged as PCGS #12238.
