Description
The 1879 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1603 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is the Barber family's Washlady design of 1879, an effort to give every silver coin from the dime to the dollar one design; Judd credits Charles E. Barber and Taxay William Barber. The name was given by David Proskey in the April 1891 sale of the F. W. Doughty collection, and the design was poorly received then, Liberty's hair being thought untidy. About 15 sets were made in both silver and copper, and the only original set still intact is the silver one in the Smithsonian. It is the Washlady dollar in silver; over a dozen are known. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1798, Adams-Woodin 1590 and Taxay EP1145. Cataloged as PCGS #61981.
