Description
The 1879 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1614 is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is part of George T. Morgan's uniform silver design of 1879, which put a modified version of his dollar head on the dime, quarter and half dollar, with five leaves instead of four above the LIBERTY ribbon. A complete set is in the Smithsonian. Morgan made these dollar reverses in 1879 to replace the eagle of the regular dollar, which had been criticized as scrawny. Over a dozen are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1810, Adams-Woodin 1587 and Taxay EP1157. Cataloged as PCGS #61992.
