Description
The 1879 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-1608, Schoolgirl is a proof dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is George T. Morgan's Schoolgirl dollar, whose reverse is a modified version of his 1877 half dollar reverse (J-1512). David Proskey gave it the name in the April 1891 Doughty sale. Fifteen are confirmed in silver, two of them in the Smithsonian and one in the American Numismatic Society, and many have been cleaned. The earliest known sale was a silver piece sold privately by Woodward to T. Harrison Garrett in 1883. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1804, Adams-Woodin 1592 and Taxay EP1152. Cataloged as PCGS #61986.
