Description
This brass medal, cataloged as J-CM-18, commemorates a Grant Parade held in 1879, associated with Ulysses S. Grant's triumphant return from his world tour. After completing two terms as president, Grant embarked on an extended journey through Europe, Asia, and Africa from 1877 to 1879, where he was received as a hero by monarchs and heads of state worldwide. His return to San Francisco in September 1879 was celebrated with parades and receptions that fueled speculation about a third presidential term. The brass composition gave this medal a warm golden appearance appropriate for celebrating a military hero and former president, while the J-CM-18 Julian designation places it within the official commemorative medal series. Grant's popularity after his world tour made medals and tokens bearing his image commercially successful products. The parade medal served as a keepsake of the public celebration honoring the Union's victorious commanding general and the nation's eighteenth president.
