Description

A leaflet sent out with some of the Wyoming centennial medals reproduced two notarized statements, one from Harrison Wright, chairman of the committee in charge of the memorial medal, and one from George Morgan, who designed the medal and cut the dies. HK-120a is the silver striking, 36 mm. Its obverse is a crowded scene of the massacre by Indians, set in a center circle, with the legend "In commemoration of the battle and massacre of Wyoming. July 3. 1778." The reverse shows the monument raised to the dead, fenced in, with 1778 at the left and 1878 at the right, and the Latin motto that calls it sweet and fitting to die for one's country. The same dies served for bronzed copper, brass, gilt copper and gold strikings and for the white metal HK-121.
