Description
The 1877 Proof Quarter Pattern - J-1499 is a proof quarter pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. The obverse is William Barber's Liberty head often called the sailor head, which he had used on the 1875 twenty-cent, half eagle and eagle patterns and on the 1876 dollar patterns; in 1877 it went onto the dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar. The single known silver example was shown in William Woodin's 1914 exhibit at the American Numismatic Society. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1652, Adams-Woodin 1541 and Taxay EP1029. Cataloged as PCGS #61834.
