Description
The 1877 Proof Fifty Dollar Pattern - J-1549 is a proof fifty-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's fifty-dollar half union of 1877, made in two obverse versions, each struck once in gold and a few times in copper. The second obverse version in copper; three examples without gilding are confirmed, and about half a dozen have been gilt. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1722, Adams-Woodin 1501 and Taxay EP1087. Cataloged as PCGS #61893.
