Description
The 1877 Proof Fifty Dollar Pattern - J-1547 is a proof fifty-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's fifty-dollar half union of 1877, made in two obverse versions, each struck once in gold and a few times in copper. The large head version in copper; fewer than a dozen are known, including examples in the Smithsonian, the Connecticut State Library and the Durham Museum. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1720, Adams-Woodin 1499 and Taxay EP1085. Cataloged as PCGS #61891.
