Description
This 1876-dated octagonal gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-799, a Period Two piece of California fractional gold. NGC lists it with an Indian head on the obverse. It is attributed to Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig. Breen and Gillio put the jewelers' issues of 1858-1882 (1859-1882 in their first edition) into Period Two; most were lighter than their face value and were sold as charms and keepsakes, until the Secret Service enforced the 1864 ban on private coinage in 1883.
