1875 Proof Twenty Cent Pattern - J-1401
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1875 Proof Twenty Cent Pattern - J-1401 is a proof twenty-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Liberty at the Seashore design, a seated Liberty beside the sea with a steamship in the distance; the Mint paired it with three twenty-cent reverses and used a modified version on trade dollar patterns of 1875 and 1876. Its reverse is close to the twenty-cent reverse adopted in 1875, except that the second arrowhead points well above the T of TWENTY and all three leaves point toward the eagle's wing. Only one aluminum example, an impaired coin, is confirmed. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1544, Adams-Woodin 1444 and Taxay EP981. Cataloged as PCGS #61708.
