Description

This bronze medal at 30mm diameter, cataloged as J-CM-28, commemorates the Centennial of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence — the disputed 1775 declaration by citizens of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, asserting independence from British rule more than a year before the national Declaration of Independence in July 1776. The Mecklenburg Declaration remains one of the most debated documents in American history; while North Carolinians maintain it was genuine, many historians question whether the document existed in its claimed form or was reconstructed from memory decades later. The 1875 centennial celebration was a major event in North Carolina, regardless of the historical debate. The J-CM-28 designation places this within the Julian Commemorative Medal series. The small 30mm diameter made this a compact commemorative suitable for pocket carry. The bronze composition was standard for medals intended for broad distribution at centennial celebrations.
