Description
The 1874 (S) Trade Dollar is a dollar produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Trade Dollars 1873-1885 series. With a mintage of 2.5 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 32% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated facing left, holding an olive branch extended to the viewer, with a sheaf of wheat behind and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bale of goods, with an olive branch and three arrows. Production ramped up across Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco as the Trade Dollar gained traction in Pacific trade routes. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $244 to $2.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 27.2 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
