Description

The 1874 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1378, Bickford International is a proof eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is Dana Bickford's international eagle, a proposal for a coin that would show what it was worth in the money of several nations: the reverse is divided into compartments giving the amount in dollars and in European currencies, with the weight and fineness at the center. It was struck on thin planchets the diameter of a double eagle. Two are known, both shown in the Woodin exhibit at the 1914 ANS exhibition; one is broadstruck and may be a mint error of J-1377. It is struck in nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1523, Adams-Woodin 1370 and Taxay EP966. Cataloged as PCGS #61682.
