Description
The 1874 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1377 is a proof eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. It is Dana Bickford's international eagle, a proposal for a coin that would show what it was worth in the money of several nations: the reverse is divided into compartments giving the amount in dollars and in European currencies, with the weight and fineness at the center. It was struck on thin planchets the diameter of a double eagle. Two or three are known in nickel, and they show an obverse die crack at about the 5:30 position. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1522, Adams-Woodin 1369 and Taxay EP965. Cataloged as PCGS #61681.
