Description
A proof die trial of the 1874 Indian Head cent, cataloged as Judd-1346a. This piece is the die trial variant of J-1346, the regular 1874 proof cent pattern. By 1874, the Indian Head cent was fifteen years into its long production run and the Mint's engraving department had refined the die preparation process to a high degree of consistency. Proof die trials from this period were produced as part of the Mint's internal quality assurance for the annual proof sets, which were sold directly to collectors. The 1874 proof cent had a mintage of approximately 700 pieces, continuing the relatively low proof production that characterized the early-to-mid 1870s. This die trial would have been struck before the proof production run began, allowing the coiner to assess whether the dies met the exacting standards required for proof manufacture. Any imperfections detected at this stage could be corrected before committing to the full proof run. The Indian Head cent's design, with its detailed headdress and wreath, demanded particularly sharp dies to achieve the crisp definition expected in proof format. Die trials like J-1346a are essential artifacts of 19th-century Mint practice.
Rarity Notes
