Description
The copper companion to J-1264, this nickel pattern completes the abbreviated two-variety program for 1873. As in 1872, the nickel denomination received only token representation in the pattern program while the dollar patterns consumed the vast majority of the Mint's creative resources. The Shield nickel design, only seven years old and still considered modern, needed no redesign under the new coinage legislation.
