The 1873 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1264 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1873 Shield nickel dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1873 copper and aluminum strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle. Two or three are known in copper; a piece on a small, thin cent planchet is a mint error, not this die trial. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1406 and Adams-Woodin 1352. Cataloged as PCGS #61549.
