Description
Closing the double eagle denomination in the Trade Dollar era and concluding the entire three-year pattern program, J-1345 is a copper rendering of the Liberty Head $20 design. As the absolute final entry in the Trade Dollar era pattern series, this piece represents the conclusion of the most ambitious and comprehensive pattern production program in American Mint history. From the Indian Head cent at J-1041 in 1871 to this double eagle in 1873, the Trade Dollar era generated over 335 distinct pattern varieties across every denomination in the American coinage system, producing the Trade Dollar that would circulate in Asian ports and forever changing the trajectory of American monetary policy.
