1873 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1344
Strike TypeCoin Details
Auction Record
$29,900 PR62 06-14-2011 Stack's Bowers
Description
Featuring the Liberty Head obverse and heraldic eagle reverse of the production $20 gold piece, J-1344 was struck in the standard silver alloy as one of the final double eagle patterns. The 1873 double eagle group is reduced to three varieties from seven in 1872, reflecting the narrowed scope of the program's final year. Without the Amazonian gilt variant that had been the centerpiece of the 1872 double eagle series, the 1873 entries adopt a more restrained approach.
