Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1873 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - Closed 3 belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 55,225 quarter eagles dated 1873 with the Closed 3. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. The Coinage Act of 1873 reformed U.S. coinage and demonetized silver, reinforcing the gold standard. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7818.
