Description
The 1873 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - Open 3 is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 122,800, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 60% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Coinage Act of 1873 reformed U.S. coinage and demonetized silver, reinforcing the gold standard. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $1.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7817.
