Description

One of two dime patterns for 1872, J-1193 features the Seated Liberty obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST and a wreath reverse, struck in the standard silver alloy. Like most non-dollar denominations in 1872, the dime received only minimal pattern attention as the Trade Dollar design competition consumed the Mint's creative resources. The dime's proven commercial success required no urgent redesign, allowing Barber to focus his energy on the dollar denomination where the stakes were highest.
