The 1871 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1172 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 half eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. The proof nickel piece, believed unique as a pattern, is ex Woodin, Newcomer and Farouk; a second, in AU with a doubled reverse, may be a mint error on a Shield nickel planchet. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1314 and Adams-Woodin 1084. Cataloged as PCGS #61435.
