The 1871 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1170 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 half eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. At least five are known in copper, one of them gilt. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1312 and Adams-Woodin 1082. Cataloged as PCGS #61433.
